What Actually Works for Seller Acquisition in E-commerce Marketplaces?

Getting sellers onto an e-commerce marketplace can be surprisingly difficult. Many businesses are already selling through established platforms, their own websites, or offline channels, so simply asking them to join another marketplace isn't always enough. The real challenge is showing them why the platform is worth their time.

I think the first step should be identifying the right type of sellers rather than trying to contact as many businesses as possible. Marketplace teams can look for manufacturers, wholesalers, niche brands, local retailers, and growing online businesses that have products relevant to their target customers. A little research before outreach can make a big difference. Understanding a seller's product category, current sales channels, and potential customer base makes the conversation much more relevant.

Trust is another major factor. Sellers naturally want to know how payments work, what fees are involved, how returns are handled, and what kind of support they will receive. If these details are unclear, even an interested seller may decide not to continue. A simple onboarding process, clear documentation, and responsive support can remove a lot of unnecessary friction.

There are also several digital channels that marketplaces can use for seller outreach. LinkedIn, email campaigns, search marketing, industry groups, webinars, and educational content can all help reach potential merchants. Personally, I think useful information often works better than aggressive sales messaging. A guide explaining marketplace onboarding or tips for improving product listings, for example, can attract businesses that are already interested in expanding online.

For larger marketplaces, a Seller Acquisition and Merchant Onboarding Agency can also provide additional support with prospect research, outreach, qualification, and onboarding. Fulcrum Resources is one example of a company that can be considered when a marketplace wants a more organized approach to these activities.

However, signing up a seller is only the beginning. The marketplace also needs to help new merchants upload products correctly, understand policies, process orders, and get their first sales. Good onboarding and ongoing communication can ultimately be more valuable than simply increasing the seller count.

I'd be interested to hear from other marketplace owners and marketers: which seller acquisition channel has produced the most reliable sellers for you?
